the magazine – Voguing is cool

Voguing has recently become very popular thanks to the excellent Pose series. For us, the Voguers are among the ambassadors of those who take power over their lives. So naturally we wanted to exchange a few words with Ritchy, friend and Voguer. Here we share a part of our conversation…

Voguing has recently become very popular thanks to the excellent Pose series. For us, the Voguers are among the ambassadors of those who take power over their lives. So naturally we wanted to exchange a few words with Ritchy, friend and Voguer. Here we share a part of our conversation…

Ritchy, what do you think Voguing is?

For me, Voguing is a symbolic and very strong culture. Voguing was created in the 80s by the colored LGBT community in the United States and only arrived in Paris in around 2009. Its provenance is the strength and meaning of this culture.
It’s a culture that allowed me to discover and reveal myself. When I’m doing Voguing I can be 100% myself.

How did you come to do Voguing?

It’s stupid, I lived in London at the end of 2012 and I was on Skype with a friend. Suddenly, a new head joins the conversation and asks my friend: “who is this guys?” We start talking together, she tells me that I have a beautiful face and explain that she is setting up a House and I’m interested. As I did not know what it was, she spoke about Voguing, Balls… I do not understand much but I’m curious. I then continue to inform myself, I watch videos and I start to get the taste for it, until in 2013, in Paris, I join LaDurée, my current House. In the process I participate in my first Balls, starting with the Face category that I leave to move to the Runway category. A category that I love because it allows me to create my own clothes to wear. As a training stylist, this is the dream for me.

And precisely what is the relationship of a Voguer to the clothing? /b>

For me it’s important to wear clothes that I made myself. I have my own character when I’m at a Ball. For example, I like to erase my eyebrows, my mouth, I like the clothes with volume, pleats, trousers elephant legs… If I bought my costumes on the Internet, I would have more trouble to be myself, to be totally free.
After that if you buy a suit on the Internet you will not be pointed at, because in the end it’s all your style that counts; the presence, the clothes, the way of walking, of dancing…

Can you give us some good tips, tell us which are the best places to see Voguing?

Balls are organized overnight by personal initiatives. It can happen several times in the month, at once. It is a very networked organization where information flows from one person to another.
The best thing is to know some people from the Ball Room Scene and keep your eyes open, especially on Facebook where information is often passed along.

Small lexicon of Voguing:

House: “The House is a community support system, which serves as alternative families to mainly young queer blacks and Latinos, and is supposed to offer safe spaces” Source Wikipedia

Mother: Person at the head of the House who is there to accompany, advise and protect its members. She plays a mentor role.

Ball: Competition during which the House competes. Each Voguer contests in one Category in a Battle Form.
